What Is the Working Principle of a Tracked Lawn Mower?

The crawler lawn mower is a professional mechanical equipment used for mowing lawns, grasslands or other vegetation.  It uses tracks as the means of walking and supporting, and has strong stability and adaptability. Compared with the traditional blade mower, the tracked mower is more suitable for working in complex terrain, slippery areas, and can provide higher mobility and efficiency.

1. Power system

The power core of a crawler lawn mower is the engine (for gasoline or diesel models). The power generated by the engine is transmitted to each working component through the transmission system, ensuring the coordinated operation of the equipment.

2. Walking part (crawler device)

The crawler-type walking device can adapt to various complex terrains. The tracks wrap around components such as the drive wheels, guide wheels and Idler Wheels, forming a continuous moving track. The power output by the engine drives the rotation of the driving wheels. And by means of the friction force generated between the tracks and the ground, it drives the lawn mower forward, backward or to turn. When turning, it is achieved by controlling the speed difference between the two tracks. For instance, if one track decelerates or stops while the other track moves normally, the equipment will then turn towards the side where the decelerated or stopped track is located.

3. Mowing section

(1) Cutting device

The cutting device of a lawn mower is mainly composed of cutting blades. There are generally two types of cutters: rotary and reciprocating.

Rotary cutter: It consists of a high-speed rotating cutter head and blades installed on the cutter head. The engine drives the cutter head to rotate, and the blades cut the lawn at a relatively high linear speed. The rotary cutter has a high cutting efficiency and is suitable for large-scale grass trimming.

Reciprocating cutter: It is composed of moving blades and fixed blades. The moving blade moves back and forth under the drive of power and forms a shearing effect with the fixed blade to cut the lawn. Reciprocating cutters have a relatively high cutting accuracy and can adapt to some scenarios where the quality of lawn mowing is highly demanded.

(2) Height adjustment device

To meet the requirements of different lawn mowing heights, the crawler lawn mower is equipped with a lawn mowing height adjustment device.

By adjusting the height of the cutter relative to the ground, lawn mowing of different degrees from low to high can be achieved. For instance, the suspension height of the cutting knife can be changed through mechanical structure or its lifting can be adjusted through the hydraulic system.

(3) Grass collection device (equipped with some lawn mowers)

Some crawler lawn mowers are also equipped with grass collection devices, which are used to collect grass chips simultaneously during operation. The collection methods mainly fall into two categories: One utilizes air flow. By setting up a fan near the cutter, the fan generates a strong air flow to blow the grass chips into the grass collection box.  Another method employs mechanical means, using rotating brushes and other mechanical components to sweep the grass chips into the collection container.
